Although the Quiz Generator allows for simple random selection of questions to include in a quiz when there is a pool of questions available, simple random selection may not give you the results you want. Purely random selection of questions does not ensure that all topic areas covered by an exam are included on a quiz. Question difficulty may vary as well, especially if different question types (multiple choice, true/false, essay, etc) are in the question pool.
You can now define rules based on the tags assigned to questions, which then determine the way in which questions are randomly selected for inclusion in a quiz. These tag-based rules can ensure that content coverage and difficulty is equitable for each student in the class, even as students are given a different set of questions to complete.
Creating a tag rule-based quiz requires the completion of the following four steps:
- Set the quiz to use a subset of all available questions and set the type of subset to Randomly select from tag-based rules. More information below.
- Add individual questions to the pool of questions available for the quiz.
- While you create the questions, add tags to each question which help define their purpose or area of content covered.
- Create rules which list the tag(s) to match for inclusion in the quiz.
How to Set Up a Quiz to Use Tag-Based Rules
- Click Quiz Generator under Activities and Assignments on the main Faculty Tools page.
- For a new quiz, click Create a Quiz at the top of the main Quiz Generator page.
- For an existing quiz, click the title of the quiz on the main Quiz Generator page.
- For an existing quiz, click Setup.
- Under the Quiz Setup tab when you create or edit a quiz, find the Display all questions, or use subset? option.
- Select Subset for Display all questions, or use subset?
- Select Randomly select from tag–based rules for Type of subset to use?
- Save your changes.
You will still need to create questions with tags and then set up the tag-based rules which determine how questions will be selected when the quiz is displayed to students.
