What is tracked in the student activity log?
The student activity log tracks the following:
- Starting the quiz
- Signing the academic ethics pledge (if enabled)
- Selecting or changing individual answers
- Striking out individual answers on a multiple-choice question
- Auto-saving of essay question responses every 30 seconds
- Leaving and returning to the quiz page
- Submitting answers by selecting the Submit Answers button
- Having answers submitted automatically if the student is not on the quiz page when the time allowed for the quiz runs out
If the detailed tracking option is enabled, the following are added after a student takes a quiz:
- Access of any course web page or lecture in the same class
- Access of files in the Online Library in the same class
- Access of Discussion Forum posts in the same class
- Access of the Drop Box in the same class
- Access of any Peer Assessment in the same class
What triggers the "Student switched away from the quiz page" and "Student switched back to the page" messages in the student activity log?
These messages appear when:
- The student clicks outside of their web browser while taking a quiz (and back in again)
- The student switches to a different tab in their web browser while taking a quiz (and back to the quiz tab again)
- The student uses language translation tools built into the browser (either via the "..." > "Translate" menu or by selecting a "Translate" icon in the main browser window)
- The student uses browser extensions that open their own pop-up window, including Google Gemini, Perplexity Companion, and Apple Intelligence Writing Tools
- The student uses Grammarly's in-textbox writing tools, including Grammarly's AI tools
CoursePlus cannot discern what tool was used, or what the student did inside the tool (eg; having Grammarly catch grammatical errors vs. writing the whole essay question response for them). This is a browser security issue, and is not something that can be overcome. CoursePlus can only discern that the student switched away or back from the quiz page in using one of these tools.
