By default, all questions in a quiz have the same weight — one point. Each question contributes equally to the total score in the quiz. You can modify weighting, however, so that different questions are worth more points in the quiz. You may want to weight essay responses more heavily than answers to multiple-choice questions. In this case, an essay question would be worth five (5) points, while multiple-choice questions would be worth one (1) point.
Note: When you have questions that allow for partial credit, the score that the student receives is based on the total points that the question is worth.
How to Weight All Questions Equally
- Click Quiz Generator under Activities and Assignments on the main Faculty Tools page.
- Click the quiz title on the main Quiz Generator page.
- Click Question Manager in the main navigation bar at the top of the page.
- Click Edit Question Weighting.
- Select the checkbox for Weight Questions Equally.
- Enter the point value of every question in the point value box.
- Click Weight Questions Equally.
How to Give Different Weights to Different Questions in a Quiz
- Click Quiz Generator under Activities and Assignments on the main Faculty Tools page.
- Click the quiz title on the main Quiz Generator page.
- Click Question Manager in the main navigation bar at the top of the page.
- Click Edit Question Weighting.
- Select the checkbox for Weight Questions Individually.
- All questions in the quiz are displayed.
- Enter the point value for each individual question in the point value box to the right of each question.
- Click Submit Custom Question Weight.
Note: If you are using tag-based rules for question selection, you will enter question weights by tag rule. All questions selected by a tag rule must have the same weight. This includes question blocks, which means all questions inside a block must also have the same weight.
