A custom graded item is essentially a points-based item that allows you to design the structure of how it will be graded. You can use words of encouragement (eg; "Excellent," "Good," "Fair") rather than a number or letter grade but still have the result calculated into the final grade with a custom grading method.
How to Use a Custom Grade as the Grading Method for a Graded Item
- Click Set Up Gradebook from any page in the Gradebook.
- When creating or editing a graded item, choose Custom Grade from the Grading Method drop-down.
- Select the incremental value across grade names in the Increments field. This feature allows you to add a value to the custom grade. The default is set to "1," which means the value will increase by 1 for each additional description added. You can change the incremental value to any number. For instance, if it's changed to "5," the value for each additional description will increase by 5.
- Click Add Grade to enter a grade name and its value. If you do not want to use that grade name and value, click Remove to delete it.
- Add all needed grade descriptions and values for the item.
- Click Save.
Note: If you change the value of a custom grade after grades have been entered for that graded item, you will receive a warning informing you that grades will change accordingly.
