You may have students who have registered accommodations which require time and a half (or double time) on all quizzes and exams. You can easily give those students special permission to do so. You might also need to give a student who had a technical problem additional time to complete a quiz.
How to Change the Allowed Time on the Quiz for a Student
- Click Quiz Generator under Activities and Assignments on the main Faculty Tools page.
- Click the quiz title on the main Quiz Generator page.
- Click Special Permissions in the main navigation bar at the top of the page.
- Click the name of the student in the list on the left.
- Enter the Total Time Allowed to Complete the Quiz.
- Click Grant Special Access.
Important: If you want to give the student more than the default time allowed on the quiz, you have to add that number to the default time and enter it into the Total Time Allowed to Complete the Quiz box. For example, if the student needs time and a half on the quiz, and the quiz is normally set to run for 60 minutes, enter "90" into the Total Time box.
Note: The time entered in the Total Time Allowed to Complete the Quiz field represents the amount of time allotted for each attempt. For example, if a student is given 3 attempts on a quiz along with 30 minutes in the Total Time field, the student will receive 30 minutes each time they attempt the quiz.
Example
An exam is allotted for 90 minutes, and the countdown timer is set to run even if students leave the quiz page. If a student starts the exam at 9 AM, the exam will auto-submit at 10:30 AM, even if the student is not on the exam page.
If you go into the Special Permissions tool before the student starts their exam and enter "120" into the Total Time Allowed to Complete the Quiz box, that would mean the student has until 11 AM to complete the exam — 120 minutes after the student starts the exam.
However, if it is already 1 PM in the afternoon and the student needs an extra 30 minutes on the exam, you would instead need to enter "270" into the Total Time box because of when the student started the exam. This will allow the student to keep working until 1:30 PM.
Since the countdown is configured to keep running, you will need to closely coordinate with the student as to when they will start accessing the quiz again. As soon as the new time value is calculated and entered in the Special Permissions page, the counter starts counting down again.
