Rubrics are what students complete to provide feedback. Creating a rubric is the second step in setting up a Peer Assessment. While there are example rubrics for you to copy and work from, most often you will create your own custom rubric for student evaluation work.
How to Create a New Rubric for an Assessment
- Once you set up the details of a Peer Assessment, click Save and Continue to Rubric.
- Click in the Instructions box to add instructions to students as needed.
- Click the checkbox if you would like to Require assessors to write a comment for each criterion.
- If you need a refresher, view the Rubric Editor Explained.
- Click Criteria to add criteria (rows) to the rubric.
- Click Levels to add performance levels (columns) to the rubric.
- Complete each cell in the rubric by clicking inside that cell and giving specific indicators as to what allows a student to achieve the performance level for that criterion.
- Provide a Points value for each cell in the rubric.
- Once you are satisfied with the rubric set up, click Save Changes.
Important: Due to the way the Peer Assessment report is displayed to students, it is crucial that the Points value for each performance level are different from each other for each criterion. For example, this means you should not simply enter "0" for all levels. Even if you do not wish to import the scores to the Gradebook, you should still use different values to differentiate the performance levels. Otherwise, students will not be able to tell how they were rated.
Note: You can leave individual cells empty by clicking into a cell and adding a space. Empty cells also appear blank in the final rubric.
