Quiz Generator Example: Set Up a Final Exam

There are many, many ways to set up a quiz or exam in the Quiz Generator. The example walkthrough below assumes the following:

• This is a final exam.
• Students can only take the exam one time.
• Students can access the exam multiple times in case their internet goes out.
• The final exam is timed.
• Once the time runs out, answers will be automatically submitted, even if the student is not on the exam page.
• As the exam contains multiple-choice questions, we want to improve exam security and randomize the display of questions.

There are other options available in setting up an exam. This walkthrough shows only how to minimally address the needs listed above.

How to Set Up a Final Exam in the Quiz Generator

1. Click Quiz Generator under Activities and Assignments on the main Faculty Tools page.
2. Click Create a Quiz at the top of the main Quiz Generator page.
3. Enter "Final Exam" as the Quiz title.
4. Enter "final exam" for Call this a [quiz, exam, mid-term, assessment, etc.].
5. Enter the date and time on which students can start taking the exam in Access begins at.
6. Enter the date and time at which the exam is due in Access ends at.
7. Select Yes for Is this quiz counted toward the students' final grade in the class?
8. If the exam is open-book, select Yes for Is this an open book quiz/exam?
9. Select Yes for Require the student to sign their name to the academic ethics code before submitting their answers?
10. Leave Number of attempts students can make on this quiz at "1."
11. Select Multiple times for During each overall attempt, students can access this quiz. This ensures that if a student loses their internet connection or accidentally leaves the exam page, they can still get back in while there is time left.
12. Select 1 day before for Automatically send an email reminder to students who haven't completed this quiz.
13. Add your instructions to Quiz instructions.
14. Select Yes for Randomize the display order of questions?
15. Select Yes for Randomize the display of answers to multiple choice questions?
16. Enter the time limit (in minutes) for Maximum time allowed to complete this quiz.
17. Select Yes for Keep the countdown timer running even if students leave the quiz page?
18. Enter "5" in First reminder at __ minutes remaining.
19. Scroll back to the top of the page.
20. Click the Sharing Results tab.
21. Make sure that nothing is selected in either the on-screen or email results options.
22. Select Yes for Hold email notification of results?
23. Click Create New Quiz.

You are now ready to add questions to your final exam.
