To create a new quiz, you first need to enter some basic information and make selections on the Quiz Setup page. Some options below are only available depending on the selection of other options in the quiz setup. Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*).
Link to this event on the course schedule (courses using Schedule Builder only)
Click the select menu to link this quiz to an item on the course schedule. You can only link to items that aren't already linked to something else. Note: When you link to an item in Schedule Builder, the dates and times of the event in Schedule Builder determine the start and due date for the quiz.
Link this quiz to the following class session(s) (courses using Class Sessions only)
Use the up and down arrows to find the class session to which you want to link this quiz. If you need to link the quiz to more than one session, use the CTRL or Command key to select multiple items.
*Quiz title
Enter a unique name for each quiz you create.
*Call this a [quiz, exam, mid-term, assessment, etc.]
Describe what type of quiz you are creating.
*Access begins at
Use the calendar icon to quickly select a date and time on which students will start having access to the quiz. Any date you select will automatically have a start time of 12:00 AM.
*Access ends at
Use the calendar icon to quickly select a date and time at which students no longer have access to the quiz. Any date you select will automatically have an end time of 11:59 PM.
If you would like students to have access until the end of the day, please make sure the time is set to 11:59 PM instead of 11:59 AM or 12:00 AM. If it is set to 4/16/2022 12:00 AM, students will only be able to access the quiz until the day before — which is similar to 4/15/2022 11:59 PM.
Note: Courses Using Schedule Builder: If the quiz is linked to an event in Schedule Builder, any changes made to the beginning and ending access dates and times in the quiz will change the dates in the schedule and vice versa. This prevents having different access dates and times that may cause problems with students being able to access the quiz.
Is this quiz counted toward the students' final grade in the class?
Select if you would like to include the quiz grade as part of the student's final grade. If not, students can access the quiz as many times as they want.
Note: Only quizzes that are marked as being part of a student's final grade in a class are imported into the Gradebook.
Is this an open book quiz/exam?
If the quiz is open book, indicate that here. If this option is set to No, the following warning is automatically displayed any time that a student starts the quiz:
Important reminder: CoursePlus keeps a log of your activity during an online quiz or exam. Do NOT leave the exam site for any reason during a closed-book exam. (If you are unsure if this is a closed-book or an open-book exam, ASK the instructor BEFORE beginning the exam). Be sure to close all other applications and turn off notifications before beginning a closed-book quiz or exam. Clicking outside the quiz or exam site (even to dismiss a message or notification) will register as a departure from the site and may give rise to an allegation of a violation of academic ethics during a closed book exam.
This is a high-stakes exam. Automatically flag students who switch off the quiz page or look at other content in this CoursePlus site.
If the exam is closed book, you can enable this option. This option will enable scanning of CoursePlus access logs to see if a student accessed anything in CoursePlus while taking the exam, and will add this activity to the student's log of activity while taking the exam.
Require the student to sign their name to the academic ethics code before submitting their answers?
If enabled, students must enter their name at the top of the quiz page indicating that they agree to the BSPH Academic Ethics policy.
Require a password to access the quiz?
If enabled, the proctor assigned to a student must enter the random password for that student for that quiz in order for the student to have access to the quiz. If enabled, the Password Management tab becomes available on the Special Permissions page for the quiz.
Number of attempts students can make on this quiz
Select how many times you would like to allow students to take the quiz. One attempt counts as one submission of answers to quiz. Students are given a warning that their answers will be submitted and marked as final. If the quiz is part of students' final grade, the default is one attempt. You can only see and grade a student's most recent attempt on a quiz.
Use the attempt with the highest score?
If you allow multiple attempts on the quiz, you can tell CoursePlus to automatically use the highest score a student achieved on the quiz across all attempts as the student's final score. If you select No for this option, the student's most recent attempt on the quiz is their final score for the quiz.
During each attempt of a quiz, indicate whether students are allowed to access any single quiz once or many times. The default is once.
If this option is set to Once, students will not be able to re-access the quiz if they leave the quiz page without special permission granted by you. If a student cannot complete a single-access quiz for some reason (ie; technical problems), they will need to be given special access permission by you to either retake the quiz or continue where they left off.
If this option is set to Multiple times, students can leave the quiz page and return as many times as they like. Any questions that were answered before leaving the page will be saved. Once they return, any previously selected answers will be displayed. Students will be able to leave and return to the quiz page until they either submit their answers or until the countdown timer runs out (if a time limit is set).
Automatically send an email reminder to students who haven't completed this quiz
You can opt to automatically send reminders to students who have not yet completed the quiz 1-5 days in advance of the quiz due date.

Click the Edit button to enter any information that you would like to provide to students prior to taking the quiz.
Display all questions, or use a subset?
You can significantly improve exam security if you set up a quiz that has more questions in the pool of questions available to the quiz than students are required to answer. For example, if the quiz has a total of 10 questions, you could choose to have six random questions made available to students. You would select Random subset then enter "6" in the field provided. Six questions would then be selected randomly and displayed for each student once they take the quiz.
Type of subset to use?
Selecting Random subset tells the Quiz Generator to randomly pick any of the questions in the pool available to the quiz. Selecting this option also requires that you enter a value in the Total number of questions to use field.
Selecting Randomly select from tag–based rules requires that you use tags on questions and set up the rules for selecting questions based on their tags.
Randomize the display order of questions?
You can select to have the display order of questions be randomized for each student. If you're using a subset of questions in the pool of questions available to the quiz, question display order is automatically randomized.
Select this option if you want the display order of answers to all multiple choice questions to be randomized for each student.
Randomize display order of questions in question blocks?
Select this option if you want the display order of questions inside question blocks (groups of questions that are always displayed together) to be randomized. If you want the first question in a block to always display first (because you're providing a data table for all questions in the block, for example), select Yes for Always display the first question assigned to a block first? All questions after the first question in each block will display in a random order to students.
Display question hints (if available)?
Selecting this option displays a link to show the hint for each question (if you created any question hints) below each question.
Maximum time allowed to complete this quiz
If this field is left blank, students will have an unlimited time to take the quiz. An unlimited amount of time and anything set to over 120 minutes may cause problems for students while they take the quiz due to internet connectivity issues.
Keep the countdown timer running even if students leave the quiz page?
If there is a time limit on the quiz, you can select to enable this option.
Yes means that students will have exactly [n] minutes from the moment they start the quiz to complete the quiz, no matter how many times they access or leave the quiz page. If the student is not on the quiz page when this time runs out, any existing answers will automatically be converted to their final answers for the quiz. The student will not be able to access the quiz again once time runs out.
No means that students will have a total of [n] minutes to spend on the quiz page, but can spend as much time as they want between visits to the quiz page.
..."time remaining" notification alarms...
You have the option to set three different warning times to alert students that they have [n] number of minutes left to complete the exam and submit their answers. The alerts appear in the middle of the quiz page while the student takes the quiz.
An explanation of the Sharing Results options available in the quiz setup can be found on the Options for Sharing the Results of a Quiz page.
