To better understand the process of setting up a Gradebook, let's walk through an example scenario for an example course.
You want to base your course's grade on the following:
- Three homework, counting as 40% of the final grade in the class
- A midterm exam, counting as 20% of the final grade in the class
- A final exam, counting as 40% of the final grade in the class
To implement this in the CoursePlus Gradebook, you would do the following:
- Click Gradebook from the main Faculty Tools page in your course.
- Click Set Up Gradebook.
- Make sure that the Overall grade based on value is set to percentage.
Handle the Homework Category
- Click Create Category.
- The three homework in the class will be put in a single category. We do this so that the total score from all three homework works out to be 40% of the student's final grade in the class. CoursePlus will handle all the calculations for us.
- Type "Homework" for the Category Name.
- Enter "40" for the % this category factors into final grade. This means that the total value of this category will make up 40% of the student final grade in the class.
- Click the checkbox for Weight all graded items in this category equally. This will ensure that all three homework carry equal weight in the grade calculation. You could have each homework have a different weight of your choosing, if desired.
- Click Save.
Handle the Midterm Exam
- Click Create Graded Item.
- If your midterm exam is run through the CoursePlus Quiz Generator, select the appropriate item in the Link to Drop Box, Quiz, Discussion Forum... select option.
- Type "Midterm" for Graded Item Name.
- Leave Grading Method as Percentage because you want the midterm to be worth 20% of the final grade in the class.
- Enter "20" for the % this category factors into final grade.
- Click Save.
Handle the Final Exam
- Click Create Graded Item.
- If your final exam is run through the CoursePlus Quiz Generator, select the appropriate item in the Link to Drop Box, Quiz, Discussion Forum... select option.
- Type "Final Exam" for Graded Item Name.
- Leave Grading Method as Percentage because you want the midterm to be worth 40% of the final grade in the class.
- Enter "40" for the % this category factors into final grade.
- Click Save.
Your Gradebook setup is now complete! You can look at a student's current grade in the class at any time by visiting the View Current/Final Grades page.
