Creating a Peer Assessment involves two separate but equally important parts:
- Determine the settings for the assessment, including the type of assessment.
- Create a rubric that will be used during the assessment.
How to Create a New Peer Assessment: The Settings
- Click Peer Assessments under Activities and Assignments on the main Faculty Tools page.
- On the main Peer Assessment page, click Create Peer Assessment.
- Click Create New Peer Assessment.
- (Required) Enter the Title of this Peer Assessment.
- (Required) Select the Opens to students on and Assessment due by dates for the assessment. Clicking the date fields brings up a calendar that can be used to easily select the date and time. Select a date and scroll the list on the right to select a time.
- (Required) Select the type of assessment that you want.
- If you are creating a group-based assessment, groups must be created before you create the Peer Assessment.
- Depending on the type of assessment, select the following options:
-
Randomly Assigned:
- Select the number of assessments each student will complete.
-
Students Assess Their Group Members:
- Select which group(s) you want to participate in the assessment.
- Note: Groups cannot be edited any later than one hour before an assessment is set to open to students.
-
Everyone Evaluates a Group:
- Select the group(s) you want to be assessed.
- Note: Groups cannot be edited any later than one hour before an assessment is set to open to students.
-
Group Assesses Other Group:
- For each group, select which group they will be assessing.
- Note: Groups cannot be edited any later than one hour before an assessment is set to open to students.
-
Manually Assigned:
- Manually assign students via the Manual Assignments tab (after setup).
-
Randomly Assigned:
- Click the checkbox if you want assessors to see the names of the students they are assessing.
- Click the checkbox if you want students to see the names of the students who assessed them (in the results view).
- If you want the Peer Assessment to be linked to a Drop Box, select the appropriate Drop Box from the Link to a Drop Box menu.
Note: By default, everyone in the class is automatically included when generating the assignment of students to other students, even if a student did not submit a file to the linked Drop Box. This allows for easier catch-up by students who failed to submit their work to a Peer Assessment-linked Drop Box in time. If you would prefer to exclude these students, click the Exclude students who have not submitted a file to the linked Drop Box checkbox.
- If you want the Peer Assessment to be linked to an event on the schedule, select the appropriate event from the Associate with an event in the course schedule menu.
- If you want to link the Peer Assessment to a Page Builder page, check the box and then select the appropriate page. You will still need to add the Peer Assessments section to that page for the assessment to appear.
- Under Rubric Options, choose if you wish to enable the following options:
-
Add an "Instructor Comments" row to each rubric for additional comments & feedback from faculty.
- This allows faculty to provide their own feedback in addition to the feedback from peers.
-
Allow students to upload a marked up file as part of their feedback.
- This allows students to supplement their assessment with a file they have worked on, as students often do. This works well for assessments that are linked to a Drop Box.
-
Allow students to view rubric before the assessment is open (only appears on linked Page Builder pages).
- This allows students to get a sense of how they will be evaluating others as well as how their work will be evaluated before the assessment period actually begins.
- Note: This feature only appears to students if this option is enabled, the Peer Assessments section has been added to a page, and that page has been added in Schedule Builder.
-
Add an "Instructor Comments" row to each rubric for additional comments & feedback from faculty.
- Click Save and Continue to Rubric.
You're done with the Peer Assessment settings. Now you need to continue on to create the rubric.
How to Edit the Settings for a Peer Assessment
- Click Peer Assessments under Activities and Assignments on the main Faculty Tools page.
- On the main Peer Assessment page, click the title of the assessment you want to edit.
- Select Setup among the tabs at the top of the page.
- Make changes as needed. Settings are explained above.
- Click Save Changes.
Important: Assessment settings are locked one hour prior to the opening of an assessment so that the individual student assignments can be created. No changes can be made from one hour before assessment opening and when the assessment opens to students. Once an assessment opens you cannot change the Opens to students on date, but you can edit the Assessment due by date so that students can continue working on their assessments.
